Dr. Glenn R. Buttermann is an orthopedic spine surgeon with Midwest Spine & Brain Institute, Minnesota.  He has mature practice based on experience, yet is also an innovator who has developed unique surgery methods and implants with an emphasis on preservation of spinal motion, and thus function. Specifically, he uses highly selective fusion surgery in deformity patients. In degenerative cases, he has been performing total disc replacement, TDR, surgery in the lumbar spine since 2005 and in the cervical spine since 2007. For multi-level cases, he is the authority on hybrid surgery (combination of TDR and fusion) which he has performed since 2007. 

His practice over the past 30 years consists of pediatric and adult spinal deformity, cervical and lumbar degenerative conditions, as well as complex revision and trauma cases.  His success is demonstrated by numerous testimonials, and independently in the outcomes presented in his publications.

He is on call staff at the Twin Cities Shriner’s Hospital, and the founder of Dynamic Spine LLC, which has developed motion sparing spinal devices and disc replacement. 

 

He has published over 59 peer-reviewed studies and gives frequent presentations. 

 

Prior to his private practice, Dr. Buttermann completed a spine fellowship at the UC San Francisco, an orthopaedic residency and biomechanics fellowship at the University of Minnesota, medical school at Mayo.

 

In addition, Dr. Buttermann has his Masters and Bachelors degrees in bio-engineering, physics and biology from UC San Diego.
